Sara accepts the Cristal award for Best TV Production at the 2022 Annecy Festival in Annecy, France
"Entre la deslumbrante estética y la creatividad con la que aborda la sexualidad adolescente sin perder por eso una perspectiva realista, My Year of Dicks se erige como una de las producciones de animación para adultos más personales, estimulantes y valiosas del 2022. La disfrutarán cinéfilos inquietos y amantes de la animación de todas las edades -infancia excluida por razones obvias-, pero no sería mala idea que se proyectase en institutos, aunque solo sea para que más de una adolescente identifique antes a idiotas en potencia."

“Between the dazzling aesthetics and the creativity with which it addresses adolescent sexuality without losing a realistic perspective, My Year of Dicks stands as one of the most personal, stimulating and valuable adult animation productions of 2022. It will be enjoyed by restless moviegoers and animation lovers of all ages -children excluded for obvious reasons-, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea if it were screened in high schools, if only so that more than one teenager would identify potential idiots first.”

This festival was an amazing time, and day by (very hot, very beautiful) day it only got better! It means more than html can say to receive the Cristal from Annecy 2022 for My Year of Dicks. We met so many people who wanted to talk about the Pams and Sams of their lives, and we thank you for sharing your hearts and your memories. Merci beaucoup!

“Hey, it’s Pam. I’m fifteen. Trying to lose my virginity. Anyway, here’s My Year of Dicks.”

-coming soon from Wonder Killer, Cat’s Pajamas, and FX Productions

With echoes of Waking Life and assorted coming of age films (SuperbadDazed and Confused), My Year of Dicks (which features contributions from an assortment of indie animators like Brian Smee and Amanda Bonaiuto) is a visually innovative mix of collage, rotoscope, archival footage, and drawings that all enhance the clash between imagination and real life.

The Animation Pimp Presents – Binocular Briefs September 2022

My Year of Dicks is a hilarious and provocative work of animation thirty years in the making. Emotional and genre-mashing, an imaginative fifteen year-old is stubbornly determined to lose her virginity despite the pathetic pickings in the outskirts of Houston in the early 90’s. This charming, heart-stomp, retro-romantic-comedy pulls no punches with its female-forward look at sexual awakening. Icelandic director Sara Gunnarsdóttir (Diary of a Teenage Girl, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”) is known for her honest, emotional artwork, and creator/writer Pamela Ribon (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet, My Boyfriend is a Bear) has been telling unusual stories with unusual heroes for a long time. This is an adaptation of her mortifying memoir NOTES TO BOYS (AND OTHER THINGS I SHOULDN’T SHARE IN PUBLIC), which NPR called “brain-breakingly funny.”
